Since
February 2003 progress has been made to give the premises a much
needed facelift
using self generated funds.
The curtains to the entrance doors and bar were dropping to bits
and obscuring the doors. These have been replaced by blinds which
are hung on the outside of the doors so do not obstruct them.
Rolled up, they allow light into the room, loose, they provide
excellent black out for performances and music events.
The reeded hardboard facia to the front of the stage had broken
away to reveal holes big enough to put a fist into. The cladding
has been removed to reveal the original 1930's panelled front,
which has now been renovated and painted.
The
main hall oak floor has also received some tlc which has brought
it back to a nourished condition.
The
Fitzwilliam Room bar has undergone major redecoration. The sticky
carpet has been removed leaving the pine floor. Lofty and Ros
have painted throughout and refurbished the bar. It must be seen
to understand the new meditteranean/contemporary feel it has been
given.
Back
of stage curtains have been replaced with black curtains which
are more suited to performances. These and the main back curtain
tracks have also been replaced by corded tracks. Users of these
curtains will appreciate this, as everytime you try to draw the
curtains, they used to fall off the track. This will avoid the
necessity to get the ladders out to re-hang every time the curtains
are pulled!
Installation of fixed sound and lighting is now being completed.
The lack of fixed equipment required expensive and delicate equipment
to be moved about on a regular basis. This plug and play system
for sound and light, which will benefit music events, performances
and meetings.
There
is still plenty to do and anyone wishing to contribute their time
or materials would be warmly welcomed. I can be contacted by clicking
